The following is an example of a blockquote:

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my lover
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet Act 2, Scene 2

The following contains an example of an inline quote:

John said to the audience Sally was crying when she shouted Leave me alone! and then ran away.

The following example uses the <code> and <samp> elements:

           sayHello('Mom');

           function sayHello(name) {

              alert('Hello " + name + '!');

           }

The JavaScript code above would output the following:

Hello Mom!

The <code> and <samp> elements don't preserve the whitespace; but the keepWhiteSpace class preserves the white space by using the white-space: pre; style rule. However, this style rule is not compatible with all browsers. The <pre> element also maintains the existing formatting of the rendered page.
